Birmingham City Hall closes due to swine flu

9/18/2009, 6:49 a.m. CDT
(AP) — BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham's City Hall is closed so crews can disinfect the building after an employee was diagnosed with swine flu.
Mayor Larry Langford ordered the building to close Thursday even though the Jefferson County Health Department said the hall should remain open because closing it would do little good since the virus is in wide circulation. Langford said he wanted to "err on the side of caution" to prevent multiple workers from going home sick and "crippling city services."
The sick employee works in the information management systems office.

Langford said the city has ordered 120 drums of hand sanitizer for workers to use regularly once the building reopens Monday.
